Even though an increasing percentage of the population is using E-commerce, the federal government isn’t adapted to this new reality. Online shopping and relocation have put our governments in a situation that’s never been seen before. Web Giants like Netflix, Amazon, Facebook and Google are generating billions in revenue, but are exempt from paying taxes in Canada.

Instead of modernizing our laws in order to keep up with those changes, the federal government is either turning a blind eye or negotiating piecemeal agreements. A good example is the agreement that the liberals signed with Netflix, giving them a huge and unfair tax break, while leaving nothing for our media companies. This inaction will have long-term consequences.

Just like Bell, Rogers and Simons, who are providing good online services, the Web Giants have to pay their fair share. Quebec’s government has recently taken action on this issue, and it’s now time for the federal government to act.
